Gaillac's children's book festival is free

More than twenty-two nationally known authors and illustrators, two days of shows, workshops and signings, in a town of fifteen thousand — and it costs nothing to get in. That is the anomaly worth writing about.

Here is something you notice by comparison: a children’s book fair elsewhere charges. Entry, workshops, sometimes even the signings. At Gaillac, everything is free — and there are more than twenty-two nationally known authors and illustrators.

That disproportion is what makes the event interesting, more than the line-up itself.

Two days, nothing to pay

The festival runs on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October 2026, at the Gaillac performance hall. Talks, workshops, shows, exhibitions, signing sessions: all of it is free to enter. There is no box office, no pass, nothing to book to get in.

For a family, that changes the whole arithmetic of an October outing. You can come and look, leave, come back in the afternoon, without indecision costing anything.

”Children and teens” — the second half counts

The full name is Festival du livre jeunesse et ados, and that is not a marketing detail. Plenty of fairs of this kind stop at picture books and first readers, leaving twelve to fifteen-year-olds on the pavement.

Here the programme covers both, which makes it one of the few events of its type where you can bring a six-year-old and their fourteen-year-old sibling without one of them being bored. Anyone who has attempted that will know it is worth the drive.

Thirty years, and it shows in the guest list

The festival marked thirty years in 2025. So this is not a fresh initiative still hunting for an audience, and that explains something otherwise puzzling: how a town of fifteen thousand attracts twenty-two authors of national standing.

The answer is simple — loyalty. A fixture that lasts three decades ends up being a date that publishers and authors put in their own diaries.

The detailed programme comes later

One point of honesty: at the time of writing, the named line-up and the precise timings are not yet published. That is normal for this festival, where the programme is finalised close to the date.

It will appear on festivaldulivre-gaillac.fr and on the town’s website. If you are coming for one author in particular — often the case with teenagers, who have their own headliners — check that signing slot before you set off rather than on arrival.

And the rest of the weekend

The festival occupies the performance hall, not the whole town. The Friday morning market takes place the day before, and it is worth arriving a day early: we devoted a whole piece to it.

As for Gaillac’s museums — the natural history cabinet of curiosities first among them — they are the natural complement to a reading weekend with children. The rest of what is on that weekend is in our calendar.
