L'Escuelle des Chevaliers
A medieval-themed B&B and restaurant in a 14th-century building on Grand Rue Raymond VII. Dinner in period costume, sleep in a four-poster, and Cordes is at the door.
L’Escuelle des Chevaliers is the kind of address you recommend with a caveat: if the concept makes you roll your eyes, walk on by. For everyone else — and there are many, judging by 260 reviews on Booking — it is one of the most memorable experiences in Cordes.
The house dates from the 14th century and sits on Grand Rue Raymond VII, the bastide’s main street. Five rooms furnished in a medieval style that does not do things by halves — four-poster beds, hangings, wrought-iron candelabra. The raw-stone walls and heavy beams are original; the rest is careful reconstruction. The bathrooms, for their part, are modern.
The restaurant is the heart of the operation. Sauced dishes cooked with period spices — cumin, ginger, saffron, nutmeg — served in a candlelit vaulted room. Costumes are on hand: tunics, coats of mail, hennins for the ladies. You can call it folksy, but the plates are good, the wine flows, and the atmosphere is catching. Breakfast the next morning — generous and costume-free — brings you back to earth.
What we love.
