La Demeure des Poètes is not in Cordes itself but below it, on a path that lives up to its name — the Chemin du Poète. A country house in stone and brick, surrounded by a planted garden, with a pool set above the grounds from which the hillsides unfold without turning your head. Patrick and Isabelle welcome guests with the ease of people who love what they do without making a show of it.
Three rooms only, and each is a decorating exercise that looks nothing like a template. Linen voiles stretched above the beds, light fittings made from branches, hand-plastered walls, bed linen in earth and ochre tones. The bathroom in the main room — double basin, pampas grass, anthracite tiles — has more character than many a hotel suite.
In the evening, if you had the good sense to book, Patrick and Isabelle serve dinner. The reviews are effusive — this is not a duty meal, it is a meal you look forward to. The rest of the time, Cordes is ten minutes by car, and the house bikes let you reach the vineyards without an engine.
