Hôtel Raymond VII

8.5 · 365 reviews

Seven rooms in a 13th-century house on Grand Rue Raymond VII — the main street of Cordes-sur-Ciel. You sleep inside the bastide, not beside it.

Hôtel Raymond VII takes its name from the Count of Toulouse who founded Cordes in 1222, and it occupies a house built in the same century. Seven rooms only, spread over three floors around an inner courtyard of stone, brick and half-timber. It is the only hotel inside the upper walls of the bastide — step outside and you are already on the Grand Rue, between the Gothic façades of the Grand Veneur and the Grand Écuyer.

The valley-facing rooms are the most sought after. Two of them, large enough for a family, look out over the Cérou and the hillsides through original mullioned windows. Exposed beams overhead, thick walls, deep carpets. The bathrooms have character — marble and period fittings — without being paragons of modernity. That is consistent: you do not come here for the design, you come for the walls.

Breakfast is served in the courtyard when the weather allows, or in the room otherwise. The hotel has no restaurant, but L’Hostellerie du Vieux Cordes and the Bistrot Cordais are two minutes on foot. In the evening, once the visitors have gone, the courtyard bar is the quietest spot in Cordes.

What we love.

The viewTwo rooms open onto the Cérou valley — the same view the bastide's watchmen had, minus the tourists.
The addressGrand Rue Raymond VII, in the heart of the upper enclosure. Step out of the hotel and you are already among the Gothic houses.
The barA glass of Gaillac in the courtyard at the end of the day, when the visitors have left and Cordes is a village again.
