La Bohème Saint Michel is a narrow house on three floors, tucked into a lane in the Portanelle quarter — the medieval heart of Gaillac, between the abbey and the Tarn. The brick-and-timber façade does not look like much, but the story is inside.
On the ground floor, a kitchen-living room with a large round wooden table, an open kitchen, a steel-and-wood staircase, and an upright piano that is genuinely in tune. On the first floor, a double bedroom with bathroom and ceiling beams. On the second, the suite — a bed facing an industrial glass wall that opens onto a covered terrace with a direct view of the Abbey of Saint-Michel. This is the centrepiece: you have breakfast above the rooftops, and in the evening, the lit abbey is close enough to touch.
Olivier, the Art&Suites owner, has chosen every object — antique chest of drawers, vintage pedestal basin, Japanese light fittings, black-and-white photographs. The whole thing has an unapologetic bohemian charm that looks like nothing else in Gaillac. Coffee and tea are complimentary, communication is smooth, and the restaurant recommendations are worth their weight in gold.
