La Maison au Puits
A stone house on rue Gargaridès in Cordes-sur-Ciel, below the hilltop citadel. Two bedrooms, a terrace overlooking the valley, and an old well in the courtyard that gives the house its name.
Rue Gargaridès is lower Cordes — the part tourists drive through without stopping on their way up to the hilltop citadel. La Maison au Puits occupies a sandstone building that has probably served as everything: a home, a workshop, a storehouse. Today it is a two-bedroom gîte with an inner courtyard and the old well that gives it its name.
Inside, it feels like a house, not a holiday rental. You set your groceries on the kitchen table, spread maps across the living room, leave the windows open at night because the thick walls keep things cool. Two bedrooms upstairs, separate enough that everyone gets quiet. No air conditioning — the walls do the work.
342 reviews on Booking and a 9.2 rating: that is rare volume for a gîte in the Tarn. The reason is probably the location — low enough for easy parking, high enough to walk up to the citadel in a few minutes. You sleep in Cordes without suffering Cordes.
What we love.
