You think you know the Gaillacois until you see it from above. At six hundred metres, in a silence broken only by the burner, the landscape rearranges itself: the town of Cordes-sur-Ciel set on its outcrop, rows of vines rippling to the horizon, dovecotes scattered across the fields, and in the distance the green cleft of the Aveyron gorges. It is, without exaggeration, the finest possible introduction.
The flight lasts about an hour, but the experience begins well before — at the inflation of the envelope, in the cool of early morning — and ends with the aeronaut’s toast, often a glass of Gaillac shared wherever the basket has come down. Several Tarn operators run these flights from Gaillac, Cordes or Albi; the launch site is decided on the day, according to the wind.
Worth knowing before you book: it all depends on the weather. A flight is easily postponed, never forced — that’s the rule, and just as well. Aim for late spring or September for the light, book early in the season, and bring sturdy shoes for landing out in open country.
Why we love it
Cordes from above
The perched medieval town reveals itself like nowhere else: from 600 metres you take in the ramparts, the rooftops and the mist clinging to the slopes.
The vineyard as far as the eye can see
Rows of vines, dovecotes, the Albigensian bastides and, in the distance, the Aveyron gorges — the whole Gaillacois in a single glance.
The magic of sunrise
Flights leave early in the morning or late in the day, when the light is low and the air calmest. The silence, broken only by the burner, is part of the journey.
The aeronaut's toast
Tradition has it you raise a glass on landing, often a glass of Gaillac. An ending to match the take-off.
