People usually visit Saint-Michel Abbey for its church and its Maison des Vins, rarely for the story of its stone. This exhibition fills the gap: set in the chapter house, it traces the life of the building, from the founding of the Benedictine abbey in the Middle Ages to the restoration works carried out today.
It follows the major phases of building and rebuilding — the church, the bell tower, the surroundings — and the successive restoration campaigns, echoing the interior restoration currently under way. A way to understand, before or after your visit, why the abbey church looks the way it does.
The exhibition is free, open to all, and rounds out a visit of Saint-Michel Abbey and the museum housed in its cellars. The up-to-date programme is published on gaillac.fr.
